Black Mountain Black Mountain is the highest peak to look over Lake George and the nearby region. It is a moderate 3 mile hike to the summit. What makes it even more special for me is that I have hiked this trail several times to shoot sunrise. There's nothing like the adrenaline running while night hiking, with nothing but a headlamp in the dark of night in the middle of the woods. I have heard some strange noises where I've actually turned the headlamp off and got low to the ground to wait out the sounds. One such sound was an odd screech that echoed through the woods one time. It was even more hair raising when the call was returned from a greater distance. I was almost 2 miles in the woods in the thick of dark. The calls occurred again and my mind raced. I have head owls screech before but this was odd - made even more odd that there was always a return call. The most relieving thing was that the calls were always off in the distance. None-the-less, this has never deterred me from summating this peak a number of times to shoot sunrise, which the above picture is from. |
