Tadpole in Egg Sack

There's a nice easy mountain I like to hike that is not far from where I stay when I'm in the Adirondacks.  At the top of this mountain is a vernal pool.  In it every spring are a massive amount of frog eggs - at least two kinds.  I revisited the pool in early May to find that many of the eggs had already hatched (if that's the right wording).  many of the egg sacks had expired but there were still a handful of tadpoles that had yet to emerge.  The photograph above is of one such specimen.  It is a remarkable thing to witness this transformation of life.  I look forward to the day when I can record the whole process.
